The Leander Lions Baseball team kicked off the season on February 23 after weeks of scrimmaging with their first game against Belton, with a 7-6 win. The Lions then consecutively lost the next four games against Bell with a score of 1-2, Austin with a score of 0-9, Temple with a score of 2-4, and Midland with a score of 0-6.

“The team’s looking good for the [start] of the season,” sophomore Anthony Beltran said. “We’re slowly progressing to be better.”

Outstanding players according to the head coach were junior Mason Montgomery, who pitched against LD Bell, senior Dayton Smith, who pitched against Belton, and senior Matthew Grissom, who pitched against Temple.

“We’re coming together as a team,” Montgomery said. “We still have a decent way to go, but I think that we have the time to prepare.”

Up next the Lions play in a district-wide tournament played at home against Vista Ridge, St. Dominic’s, Liberty Christian, Vandergrift, and Hutto this week. Schedules for the remainder of the games can be found here.
