As we wind down the football season, we get ready for baseball. Baseball is America’s favorite pastime and millions of people are excited for the World Series which is one of the most watched sports events of the year. Our very own Leander Lions are getting ready for baseball with their head coach, Matt Grissom.

The varsity team is expecting to win the district and go as far as possible in the playoffs. One of the senior baseball players is Christopher ‘Luke’ Farmer. He is currently 18 years old and his hobbies, besides playing baseball, are working out, playing Xbox, and going to Top Golf.

“It’s kind of scary,” Farmer said, “Your future is right in front of you and high school is almost over. It’s a lot to swallow and it comes way too fast.”

Being a senior really scares him and he also doesn’t want high school to end. To him, the future seems overwhelming and it’s a lot of pressure.

“I started playing baseball at the age of 13 and 14,” Farmer said. “As a kid, I really didn’t like it at first, but after a while, it started to grow on me and I soon learned to love the sport.”

A lot of time, a person starts playing at a younger age like six or seven, but Farmer was really lucky to have the talent to play that young. 

“[You need] Hard work, determination, a lot of time and effort to your team and the sport, and the love for the sport,” Farmer said. “If you don’t like it, you won’t last a week.”

Farmer is willing to do anything to win and not let his teammates down, never giving up if the game is on the line.

“People ask me if I do play baseball,” Farmer said. “[When] I say yes and then they say that is very cool and they seem surprised at the same time.”

Athletes in general have the respect of their peers because they have a drive and a passion to never give up.

“We are constantly in the weight room lifting and running to work on speed,” Farmer said.

In order to be prepared for the upcoming season, the Lions practice every day and are always improving so they can sweep the other teams in the district.

“[Our goal is to] win district and go as far as in the playoffs as possible,” Farmer said.

Like most of the seniors and everyone else in the class, their goal is always to be the best in the area and prove to everyone that the Lions are winners.
