Mu Alpha Theta, Leander’s math honor society, opened the doors of their student-run tutoring center, The Den, this past Monday. The club members spent a Saturday decorating and prepping an unused classroom to convert it into a math-themed learning environment.

“I wanted to start the tutoring center because students can benefit by hearing something explained by other students,” math teacher Shawna Queen said.

It was this drive that led Queen to take the necessary steps of getting permission from administration in order to begin “construction.” To her, the obvious club for the job would be Mu Alpha Theta.

“Our club members spent several hours organizing it,” Co-President Sydney Platt said. “All of our members are also required to tutor five hours each semester.”

In The Den, students are welcome to come in for one-on-one or group  math tutoring. Students can form their own math study groups with friends. They can even come in just to do their own math homework, asking for help only when they need it.

“If kids are ever struggling with  a math concept, I want The Den to be the first thing they think of for help,” Queen said.

Math tutoring in The Den is available in the mornings from 8:00-8:30 a.m. on Monday-Friday. Afternoons are open from 4:00-5:00 p.m. on Monday-Thursday. Pride Time tutoring is available by appointment through a math teacher.
