Swimming towards State
Lions break individual records at regional meet.

The swim team went to regionals last Friday and Saturday in Dallas. Both boys and girls relays placed best overall in beating their personal times.
“I can’t think of anything that could’ve gone better,” sophomore Mara Sherry said.
The meet was a two day event. The Preliminaries were on Friday, and the swimmers had to place in order to compete again on Saturday.
“It was brilliant, the swimmers swam faster than they thought they could and I was so pleased with them and the way training went all season,” head swim coach Jason Schmidt said. “The taper portion, a period for bettering your technique, was just awesome too, so many variables are out there and we handled it all very very well.”
This season, the swim team has broken 11 out of 24 previously held records which includes the girls and boys freestyle relay, the boys 400 freestyle relay and the 100 freestyle relay.

Junior Sarah Cano qualified in the 100 backstroke and senior Tanja Milanovic qualified in the 200 individual medley. They both finished fourth overall, and the top two automatically go to State from each of the eight regions. 16 total swimmers from Texas in each event. The next eight, to make 24 total swimmers, are based on their times. Cana and Milanovic are both slotted in 24th place, as they are both from the same school.
“I’m really excited about state,” Cano said. “I thought after regionals that there was no way I was going to make it. I couldn’t be happier that I get to go with Tanja by my side.”
Cano and Milanovic will swim on Friday, Feb 17 at UT. Milanovic and Cano are at the olympic training center now and will go to finals tomorrow, Feb 18 at State.
