The tennis team placed twice in the April 5th tournament held at Georgetown High School, with mixed doubles team senior Adithya Balaji and junior Emilie Scanlon advancing to the quarterfinals before being stopped by Georgetown with both scores being of 6-0. They defeated Cedar Park 6-0 and 6-2 in order to reach the quarterfinals.

“I was glad to make it to quarterfinals since we had an easy first match,” Balaji said. “We did exactly how I thought we would.”

Balaji and his partner Scanlon did hit a snag with a match with Georgetown.

“Their skills were more refined than ours and they probably had more experience than we did,” Balaji said. “If I could go back in time I would’ve taken more chances and hit harder shots instead of playing it safe.”

He also looked back at this past year on the team.

“This year has been a fun year, and probably the most fun out of all four years being on the tennis team,” Balaji said.

Boys’ doubles team senior Joseph Rexrode and senior Luis Farias advanced onward to the finals of the tournament, defeating Georgetown 6-4, 3-6 and 6-0. They also took down Cedar Park with both scores being 6-4. Their next opponent was the Vandegrift tennis team in the finals the day after.

“I definitely knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but we had a good shot of making it to the finals,” Farias said. “To do it I knew we had to just play solid and be focused in all of our matches.”

Farias described the difficulty of making it into the finals.

“The boys’ doubles draw in particular was filled with the top players in the district, so making it far is a big accomplishment for us,” Farias said. “The level of doubles was really high this year compared to past years.”

With this year of tennis coming to a close, Farias ends his tennis career in high school on a high note.

“This year has been probably the best year of my high school career,” Farias said. “Although we didn’t win all the tournaments I felt that we really grew as a team and played high-level doubles in every match. I’m glad we were able to play together and I feel like it was a great way to end our high school careers.”
