When the girls basketball historic season ended last year in a loss to San Antonio Brennan at the regional championship, coach Jonathan Lamb knew his team would face high expectations this year.
“Our program goal is to reach the playoffs every year, and in the district that we play in, that is not an easy task,” Lamb said. “Last year was a great year and learning experience for our program. We are just working hard right now to try to qualify for play-offs and give ourselves another opportunity to make a run in the playoffs like we did last year.”
To kick off district play, they traveled to Vista Ridge to take on the Lady Rangers.
Senior point and shooting guard Alisa Greene had 15 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Junior point guard Rayanna Carter score 16 points and had 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
“The first half I had trouble scoring, [because] I wasn’t attacking the rim as much,” Greene said. “But the second half I was just able to slip the defense and finish out the rim, as well as hit some shots outside, and a lot of that was attributed to just my teammates being able to move the ball around and just actually running our offense.”
McKenna Hicks contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.
With the defeat, the girls move to 8-10 on the year and will host the Dripping Springs Lady Tigers on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The Lady Tigers enter the game with a record of 10-5, after falling to Georgetown.
“They do like a circle motion,” Carter said, “so we’re just kind of working on being in the passing lanes and mid-line.”
The JV team lost their first district game against the Lady Rangers.
“We went in going hard knowing it was a fast game and in the end we came in short,” sophomore Malak Mohamed said. “I’m not that mad about the loss because I know we’ll see them again and we’re coming fighting.”
The Lady Lions will play at the Georgetown Tournament on Saturday, December 13.
The Lady Lions lost their last game against Vista Ridge.
“We ran a lot of what Vista’s offense would do,” post Busi Banda said. “and we tried to adjust our defense; we scrimmaged against Varsity for that.”
They’re next game is at the Georgetown Tournament on Saturday, September 13.
