Lady Lions Hit It Out of the Park

The softball team goes into the second round of districts with a winning season.

The Leander varsity softball team has been working hard this season thus far. They have been working since August preparing for this time of the year doing workouts and other team activities. According to senior Hannah Giamfortune, the team has a huge target on their backs because of how far they went last year’s season.

“We know how important it is to come in and work hard everyday,” Giamfortune said. “We’ve learned by working hard everyday how to stay calm and prepared in challenging moments during close games.”

The Lady Lions’ current district record is 5 wins and 1 loss. They have beaten the Vista Ridge Lady Rangers, the Cedar Park Lady Timberwolves, the Vandegrift Lady Vipers, and the Dripping Springs Lady Tigers. Unfortunately they have lost to the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs.

“It was our first district game while we were prepared, we had a mindset that we would just win easily and Marble put up a good fight,” Giamfortune said.

It’s not all wins and loses here in the Leander softball program, the team hosted a fundraiser this past weekend. People from community have the opportunity to come to the field and take part in “Slug Fest”. This event entails a heart to compete and a bit of humility. You can pay to hit a ball off of the tee, five balls for $5, and try to get as many homeruns as you can. There were kids of all ages and even some adults. The team also had a dunking booth to show off your killer pitch. Anyone could dunk the players and even Coach Driver got a little wet! It was a chance for the team to really reach out to the community while raising a little bit of money.

Now all the fun has ended and it’s back to work. The Lady Lions will enter their second week of district tonight, March 25, against the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs.

“I’m excited for the second round of district and to come out with a fight and earn the title of district champs,” said Giamfortune. “From there I hope to go very far in playoffs and make more memories.”

Even though it’s a school night send your support and share in their excitement as our team travels tonight.
