This is the 5th season in the series. It is the first that Jessica Lange will not be a part of.

There was a lot of skepticism when it was announced that Lady Gaga would be joining the AHS family. Many of the actors have been with the show since the first season and though there have been many new additions to the cast and special guests, (Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Levine) Lady Gaga brings something new to the show. This is the first season without Jessica Lange, a fan favorite since the beginning. So far the first couple episodes have been amazing and those alone earn the season 5 stars.

This season takes place in the Hotel Cortez. Like previous seasons, the set automatically takes you to a different place with the 1920’s architecture and the costumes of each character. The sets are always a huge part of the story. With the Hotel Cortez, very interesting people have stayed and continue to stay in the building.

Though many character’s stories have yet to be told, we have already been told a little about The Countess’ story (Lady Gaga) along with Hypodermic Sally (Sarah Paulson), Donovan (Matt Bomer ), Detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley) and Mr. March (Evan Peters). Each has a very unique background and personality. Someone to look forward to getting to know would be Elizabeth Taylor played by Denis O’hare. Known for playing complex characters with interesting appearances, he is dressed as a woman with style. His character has been working for the hotel for a long time and seems to have many secrets. Each character has some kind of tie to The Countess which will be interesting to see more of.

One theme for the season seems to be blood. The carnage from previous seasons is seen even more with this one. There is always some kind of body horror that really scares people and it looks like there will be a lot of that with this season. It is definitely not for the feint of heart and is rated M for a reason. Though it can be very disturbing at times, it can also be very moving and inspiring. American Horror Story shows both the good and really bad of humanity which is part of the reason why it’s so interesting.

There is much to look forward to with this season. The new additions to the cast, new set, and another layer to the story. Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of American Horror Story has said that the stories all connect. Hopefully we will see a link in this season or even more.
