After finishing up tournament season with the Colony Classic, the boys took on Vandegrift and Cedar Park for their first couple of games for district play.

The Lions played against the Timberwolves Jan. 9, after losing their first game to the Vandegrift Vipers 60-58 on Jan. 6.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” senior Joe Mahoney said, “but we had to stick to our game plan and get it done, and we just fell a little short”

The game began with the tip toward Cedar Park and continued to remain in their favor. The Timberwolves led each quarter by at most five points except for the second in which both teams were tied at 20 points.

“We were up with a minute to go,” Mahoney said, “and they made a tough shot and put them up by two.”

After a performance by Principal Tiffany Spicer and some Blue Belles, the boys returned to the court, determined to take the lead. They soon took possession of the ball, defending the Timberwolves and scored. The lead did not last long as both teams remained neck-in-neck until the final two minutes of the game when Cedar Park extended their lead by about five points. The Lions returned each score, catching up, but there wasn’t enough time on the clock for the boys to score. The boys lost 41-39.

“We just came up short,” senior Daniel Black said. “They were pretty good, but we’ll get them next time.”

Major of the players of the game were Black with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds; Mahoney with six points and four rebounds; junior David Bonner with 10 points and four rebounds; and sophomore Chase Cotton with two points and nine rebounds.

The Lions will take on Marble Falls at Marble on Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and resume their district schedule Jan. 19 with a home game against Eastview at 7:00 p.m.
