Varsity Boys’ Soccer Advances to Playoffs
Tie against Vandegrift secures spot for Lions
March 19, 2014
In an exciting final district game against Vandegrift, the Lions held out their own and came out with a final score of 0-0. This tie was just what the team needed; now they are officially in the playoffs for the first time in three years, the second time in LHS history. Their season consisted of four wins, five losses, and one tie.
Head Coach Russ Girard, along with Assistant Coach Eric Sundheim, have spent a long season working the team through training and practice.
“It’s a great reward for a lot of hard work,” Girard said. “The quality of leadership from the seniors has been great.”
The coaches and team captains plan to continue that work ethic and keep the excitement amped as they take on their first District Playoff opponent, the Lyndon B. Johnson High School Jaguars, which is located in northeast Austin.
“We’re going to keep working hard and not change anything we do to suit anyone else,” Girard said. “We’ll make them change to suit us.”
Players and friends are excited to be involved, especially since this is the first time the Lions have gone to District Playoffs in three years.
“I’m really psyched to be a part of it,” junior Christian Vieira said. “This has been a great experience with a great group of guys.”
The Varsity Lions first District Playoff is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 25.
“It’ll be so exciting if we win,” freshman Talen Maples said. “We’ll be making history.”
