History Making Year for Track

by Brianna Acosta

Last Friday, the girls track team competed at the state finals held at the University of Texas. The 4×400 team of sophomore Rayanna Carter, senior Katherine Strubel, sophomore Funmi Orekoya and junior Erica Lavin placed 7th overall and tied the school record of 3:56:68.

Lavin placed 8th in the 200, running a 25.49 and breaking a decade-long school record. This record breaking year for the girls brought great achievements for the team, the school and themselves.

Lavin competed with both the 4×400 team and individually placing her on the record board twice.

“We weren’t expecting to be so far up there,” Lavin said. “We were just going for the experience.”

The team is excited about next year with high hopes of making it to state again. Lavin hopes that next year she will be able to beat the record she placed this year. The 4×400 team wants to make it even further next year.

With the great accomplishments the team had this year, they have a great foundation for next year. A lot of the younger team members are ready and willing to step up and take the place of the graduating members. These girls are ready to go back to state next year.

“This was a super exciting year,” Coach Gigi Heermans said. “Next year is going to be just as exciting with a lot of inner squad competition.”
