Varsity Volleyball: Area Champions to play Cedar Park in Regional Quarterfinal

    To kick off the Lady Lions’ postseason the team traveled to the Delco Center to face the McCallum Lady Mustangs last Tuesday, November 5. McCallum came out playing in the first match, solidifying numerous points for themselves. Leander was able to defeat the Lady Mustangs by playing an aggressive game at the net. The score to the first match was 25-17, LHS. The Lady Lions went on to win the next match as well. Both teams made more errors in this game, however the Lady Lions were able to overcome and score off kills and aces. The resulting score was 25-16. The third match was consistent of both the first and second matches. The Lady Lions were able to put up a big block at the net, shutting down the Lady Mustangs’ offense. The girls were also able to break down the Mustang defense with their hitting. The team was able to gain another victory of 25-18, advancing them further into playoffs.

    The following Friday, the Lady Lions traveled to San Marcos High School to face the Alamo Heights Lady Mules for the second round of playoffs. The game was lengthy and intense. To start the the first match, Alamo Heights gained a huge advantage with a lead of 5 points. The lady Lions couldn’t seem to shake free of their own mistakes in the beginning. They were, however, able to turn the tables with a major comeback around point 19. The team pulled out a win with a score of 25-21. The next match was not so fortunate for the Lady Lions. Alamo Heights was able to play a very strong offensive game which in turn resulted in a win for them. The Lady Lions arrived offensively as well but it proved to be not enough. The Lady Mules won 20-25. The third match was extremely tense. Neither team was going down without a fight. Alamo Heights played incredible defense, almost forcing Leander to make mistakes. The match ended in victory for the Lady Mules once more; 23-25. The fourth match could have been the last match for the Lady Lions, but they showed that they weren’t giving up without a fight. The girls were aggressive on offense as well as behind the serving line. The Leander defense showed off their ability to perform under pressure. The match ended in the Lady Lions favor with a close score of 26-24. The fifth and final match was neck and neck all 15 points. Alamo Heights would score and then Leander. Back and forth like that until the end. Senior Erica Luke scored point 14 with an aced serve. Senior Megan Slan followed that point with a kill; ending the game and earning the Leander Lady Lions advancement to quarter finals.

The Lady Lions will take on the Cedar Park Lady Timberwolves once more tonight, November 12, at Rouse High School at 6 pm. Adult tickets are $5.00 and Student tickets are $3.00 at the gate. Show your school spirit by coming out and supporting them.
