Sophomore wrestler goes into triple overtime match

by Caroline Cravens, Assistant Editor

During the State Wrestling Tournament sophomore Zeke Garcia advanced past the Consolation Quarterfinals and ended losing a match 3-2 in triple overtime one spot away from the platform. Garcia was the only Leander wrestler to make it to State.  In Regionals junior Ekeira McKinney placed sixth and junior Gabe Warren placed fourth.

Garcia had a tough match and he feels as though he could’ve won it if he had been feeling better.

“We were tied 2-2 and we had the first one to score, and we both didn’t score,” Garcia said. “So he started on bottom, and he got up so then it was 3-2. I had to score, which I just didn’t. I was real sick, so it was just hard to breathe, but it wasn’t the hardest match I’ve ever been in.”

Overall Garcia thinks his season went pretty well, but there were things that he and his team could’ve done differently.

“I think I could’ve done better with my shots and my take-downs,” Garcia said. “[The team] just had a lot of stuff to work on, and we had a lot of young people.”
