The swim team placed second overall at their meet against the Georgetown Eagles and the East view Patriots last Saturday. The team had a total combined score of 203.

“[This] was another fantastic day for a swim meet,” swim coach Jason Schmidt said. “We especially need to keep our focus and dedication on swimming as we approach the holidays.”

The boys team won ten overall individual events. Senior Mason Miller won third in the 200 yard freestyle and third in the 100 yard breastroke, juniors Leon Ward and Brian Nguyen won first and second respectively in the 200 yard individual medley. Senior Tanner Hartwick won first in the 50 yard freestyle, and third in the 500 yard freestyle, and senior Matthew Whieldon won first in the 100 yard butterfly and first in the 100 yard backstroke. Ward also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle.

“Everyone swam hard and fought a hard fight,” Ward said. “This was our last home meet, but that only means we have to ride a bus before we beat the other teams now.”

The girls team won an overall of six individual events. Junior Sarah Cano won first in the 200 yard freestyle as well as first in the 500 yard freestyle, senior Maddie Phillips won second in the 100 yard freestyle and sophomore Chloe Herm won third in the 100 yard freestyle. Herm also won second in the 100 yard backstroke, and freshman Brelyn Cary won second in the 100 yard breastroke.

“It was a fun time,” senior Tanja Milanovic said. “East View was fast, so we really had to get up and race. The team as a whole did great, and [I’m] very proud of my teammates.”

The men’s relay team won second in the 200 yard medley, second in the 200 yard freestyle, and third in the 400 yard freestyle. The women’s relay teams won third in the 200 yard medley, second in the 200 yard freestyle and third in the 400 yard freestyle.

“Swimming has taught me how to drive my self determination,” Hartwick said. “[I] strive for my goals in and out of the pool.”

On October 8, the Lions had a swim meet against Mcneil and Rouse. They ended that meet with a combined team score of 155, and came in second overall. They also were able to win the Leander Cup, a trophy developed by Rouse and Leander, for the fourth year in a row.

“We’re really close with the Rouse team so it was exciting to see and compete against them again,” Sherry said. “It was almost like a family reunion.”

The next meet will be held at A&M on Saturday, October 29. It will be an invitational meet, meaning multiple schools from all over Texas will be in attendance.
