Alternative pop artist Malcolm Todd has announced he will be releasing his next album, Do That Again, on June 5. Ahead of the release, he dropped a new single and video, “I Saw Your Face,” a post-breakup track co-directed by Todd and Aidan Cullen.
Todd, who is a breakout artist this year, dropped his new song ‘I saw your face yesterday’ on April 24 of this year. The song came out to mostly high-rated reviews by listeners, being rated an 86 out of 100 on Album of the Year.
Todd delivers a very emotional speech about his post-breakup life. The song is catchy and memorable. However, it’s also formulaic, especially when compared to his earlier work.
“I thought it was a great song,” said sophomore Evan Bernard. “He puts so much effort into the vocals, and the beat of the song is also really good. For me, it was overall a nine out of 10.”
“I thought it was pretty good,” said junior Jake Ngyunen. “It definitely is not his best song but it is definitely going into my playlist.”
But not everyone thought that the song was good.
“I thought the song was very stereotypical,” said freshman Wael Oweis. “When I listened to the song, I thought it was not that good. The vocals are decent, but I feel like I’ve heard that same song ten times because it sounds unoriginal.”
Despite the mixed reactions regarding its originality, “I Saw Your Face” has undeniably succeeded in its primary mission: keeping Malcolm Todd at the center of the alternative pop conversation. Whether fans view it as a catchy evolution or a safe step within his formula, the buzz generated by the single has set a high-stakes stage for the upcoming album.
