500+ graduates prepare for ceremony

In a new, but hot, dance gym, more than 500 graduates practiced sitting in the correct chair, lining up in order, learning where to park and, well, flying paper airplanes.

Seniors were told to be in the dance gym around 8:30 a.m. for practice that started around 9 a.m.

Graduation practice was mandatory.

The ceremony starts at the HEB Center Friday, May 29 at 6 p.m.

Students cannot bring any electronic devices to the event and cannot wear any cords other than those given at the senior awards ceremony last week.

Ronin Miklos: “It’s useful to know what to expect on graduation day so we’re not going in blind. Granted I didn’t want to go to school today, but it’s pretty useful.”

Valedictorian Elizabeth Chaison: “I first knew about it after they updated our GPA in the second semester of my junior year. After that, I kept it under wraps because I didn’t want to put that pressure on myself. It was difficult to be valedictorian, but I didn’t do anything differently than I would have normally. It’s not about having the goal to be valedictorian, it’s pushing yourself as far as you can go. I find ways to find things that are important to me already and then supplement my academic life with different things that bring me value. It was kind of surprising, but the announcement that I was valedictorian was kind of an affirmation of how hard I worked. I’m a little bit nervous about my speech at graduation. I’ve been thinking about what things were important to me and what I wanted to include in a speech. It’s hard to sum the speech up, but it’s basically that each person has a duty to make an impact on the world, because they’re the only one who can. None of us can save the world, but we can all play a part in it. All we can do is the best we can do and that’s what we have to do.”
