PALS instructor Michaela Settlemeyer and junior Elena Slaton paint a Lion mural in the atrium hallway to give PALS students a legacy.

“I thought about doing this mural for the last couple of years,” Settlemeyer said. “I finally got it organized in my brain and figured it out so PALS students have a legacy.”

Students have been working on the sketch and painting for several weeks.

“Everybody has to paint at least one triangle because I want them to have something to come back and be like: ‘I painted that triangle!’ and if they want to do more, they can do more,” Settlemeyer said. “Whoever wants to put the work in, because it takes a lot to do something like this.”

Settlemeyer, who is leaving Leander High School for another job after this year, said the lion was the final choice from a variety of options.

“I got the original mural design on the internet and then I changed it around a little bit, did some adaptation on the image I found, changing the colors and shapes and things like that,” Settlemeyer said. “Then I gave Principal [Chris] Simpson four different options of images that he would approve for us to put on the wall, and this was our favorite one and we’re lucky that he also chose this one as his favorite.”
