During The Girlhood Club’s Nov. 6 meeting, members created affirmation jars, decorated mason jars containing slips of paper with different encouraging statements for themselves. Later they described a change they’d like to see in the world connected with The Girlhood Club’s mission, creating a judgement-free safe community.
Sophomore Addison Ovalle: “A change I want to see in the world is more women empowerment and woman involvement. Since we’ve had the right to vote, women have had more involvement in the workforce and this is my way of [participating] into a club that’s women based, for women, about women so we can help each other and empower each other. I believe that this club is my way to empower women personally, doing things like affirmation jars which help empower ourselves and others. This club helps what I believe. I’m in this club to help women and to help women empower themselves and to help empower myself as a woman.”
Junior Kierra Mcashan: “I really want more gender equality as well as wealth equality. I don’t think billionaires should exist because it’s insane that someone has that much wealth when there’s so much wealth disparity. Also more involvement from women in general, I just want to create a safe space for everyone and people to feel open to talk with everybody here and I do that by participating in this club.”

Junior Elizabeth Hui: “I want to see women treated equally to men and not be discriminated against, also for sexism, misogynistic comments, discrimination, and unequal pay to stop being normalized. I want there to be more bodily autonomy for women around the world and this connects to my involvement in the club because all these things align with the mission of The Girlhood Club where we ask for social change in our community and in the world and model that through our meetings and community and impact.”
Sophomore Jinelle Nuevo: “One change I want to see in the world is women empowerment and more support for people in need, specifically people in wars. Right now in the Philippines there’s a lot of flooding that’s happening and I want to see more [collaboration] to empower people and help them, and this club helps empower women. I feel like in a lot of other countries there’s a lot of women being discriminated against. I want more women to feel like they can be comfortable everywhere, like in the streets.”
Sophomore Misha Sharma: “A change I want to see in the world is that I want to see more people coming together within common interests, I think we’re all very separated and divided in this society right now. I think having a common goal to work towards, especially in high school, is really beneficial to women, like building a community. This club is a community, even though it’s not academic we’re in school and it provides a place where you can safely be part of a community.”
