With pop artist Olivia Rodrigo on backup vocals, Women in STEM hosted its first panel today, featuring students involved in the University of Texas at Austin’s own WiSTEM program. The event, lasting from 3:30 to 5 p.m., featured four speakers from a variety of different majors, each hailing from science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Biology major and panelist Keaton Croom responds to moderators Cat Alfaro and Lizzy Hui's question regarding any deterrents she's faced in her program. Croom admitted that she has faced little discrimination on the bases of her sex in UT's pre-med classes. “UT is the most welcoming place,” Croom said. “I definitely have never felt unwelcome as a woman. It was a hard transition, curriculum wise, but in terms of feeling comfortable and feeling pushed in a classroom UT is great. The most gratifying aspect of being a woman in STEM is the immediate recognition of each other. It really is a community that is so fun to be a part of.”
