Top 5 activities for October

5 things to do this month

by Kyle Gehman, Editor-In-Chief

The temperature starts to drop, the leaves start to fall, and all the decorations for Halloween start appearing in stores. October has finally arrived which means all of the great activities that go with this month are here as well.

  1. Hiking

With the weather starting to drop into the low 70’s and the leaves starting to change from the summer yellow to green and orange, it’s a perfect time to go hiking. There are many trails around Austin and Cedar Park that are great to hike. My favorite is St. Edward’s Trail, with 80 acres of trails including a few stream crossings.

  1. Oktoberfest

This Austin festival is a one day replica on October 22 of the German Oktoberfest. Students can go around trying different types of sausages and wursts and enjoy live music at night as well as bowling. It’s also a great way to experience Central Texas German Heritage.

  1. Halloween

It’s a pretty obvious activity for October but there’s a lot that goes along with it besides children going trick-or-treating. There’s pumpkin carving, costume parties and of course eating all of the specialty candy like candy apples and candy corn. All of these activities are what help make Halloween fun for anyone.

  1. House of Torment

This haunted house is a popular attraction every year for people of all ages. Recently it was voted the #1 haunted house in the nation. This year they have expanded and now have 40,000 square feet of scares with three different houses, each with a different theme. It is located off Ridgepoint Drive northeast of Austin and is open for another year of scares.

  1. Pumpkin Patches

An old October pastime that is still popular today is visiting the pumpkin patches. Varying on location, visitors can take pictures in the pumpkin patch, go through a maze, enjoy different food stands and much more. Barton Hill Farms is one of the best pumpkin patches around, it is located in Bastrop, Texas which is a little less than 30 miles southeast of Austin.  Barton Hill Farms is a great place to go with family or just for a fun afternoon with friends.
