2011 District Track Meet

By: Haley Hartwick

April 12-14th marked the 2011 16-5A District track meet, which was held at Pflugerville High School. It was an intense and exciting three days filled with lots of sweat, smiles, and victories.  Although Leander didn’t top in overall team scores they sure did top in overall individual events but as Coach Heermans always says, “I’d rather have quality over quantity any day.”

Leander had over  15 varsity athletes both boys and girls that competed and placed in the top 3 of their events and are now qualifiers for Regional’s which will take place May 2nd and 3rd. The girl qualifiers include Jessica Owezie, who is not only of the class of double 1’s but she also earned double 1’s herself by placing 1st in both Shot Put and Discus. Haley Hartwick, got 2nd place in pole vault with a height of 9’6 not only setting a new record for herself but a new school record too. Corrine Cisse had an outstanding performance not in just one event, but 3! She received 1st place in triple, 1st place in the 800, and 2nd place in the 400m dash. And Stephanie Wangui was right behind her the whole way earning 2nd place in the 800. Last but not least the 4×4 relay consisting of members Stephanie Wangui, Corinne Cisse, Lexi Brooks, and Michelle Madrigal won first place beating the school record with a time of 3:57.68 which had been their best race all season!

It was a successful meet too for the Leander boys with all 3 relays and their members Tyler Rountree, Andy Gonzalez, Cody Turner, Tevin Smith, Nico Brown, Martel Summers, Brandon Floerke, and Kyle Denny taking 1st place in the 4×1, 1st place in the 4×2, and 2nd place in the 4×4. And superb individual performances go to Nico Brown with a 1st place win in the open 200 and Kyle Denny also with a 1st place in the open 400 with a time of 49.76.

The Leander track team has had one of its best seasons ever and cannot wait to win a few more gold medals at the Regional meet at Baylor.
