After a long tournament season that began in February, the start of district play opened for the varsity baseball team last week against the Georgetown Eagles.

The first game of the series ended with a final score of 3-7 in favor of the Eagles. At the top of the 3rd inning, the Lions did have the lead but could not hold onto a victory against the Eagles. The defense was lead by starting senior pitcher Cameron Castillo. Backing him up in the field was senior catcher Wayland Carry, junior outfielder JJ Larson and senior second baseman Jason McCall. The Lions’ bats were not as lively as they would have wanted according to head coach Matt Grissom, but they had a little time to fix that until the next game that week.

“It’s a very easy fix but we are going to have to focus really hard,” Coach Grissom said. “Hopefully we can fix it and come back with a win Thursday. “

The next game was played at Georgetown on Thursday. The Lions came up short with the final score 2-4. Senior Joel Miller pitched against the Eagles and only walked three batters. Senior Isaiah Martinez and senior Jason McCall tried their best to back Miller up on and off the field, but in the end, the Lions could not hold on long enough.

We gave it all we had but we could not pull a victory.”

“We played strong all night,” senior Joel Miller said. “We gave it all we had but we could not pull a victory. We will against the Vipers next week though.”

The Lions continued their district season against the Vandegrift Vipers on March 22nd at Vandegrift and will play again on today at The Diamond at Leander.
