The Crosstown Showdown took place at Gupton Stadium last Friday night. The Lions lost the game 51-14 after a tough game against the #1 ranked team in the state, the Cedar Park Timberwolves.

“First half we did great,” senior Matthew Long said. “It was 17-7 and we were in it. We made a few mistakes in the first half though that’s why they were up by that much. In the second half we didn’t play like we did in the first half, and that’s how the game got out of hand and away from us.”

Cedar Park scored on their starting drive after a stalled Lions drive. The Lions recovered a fumble on a punt after a Cedar Park player touched it, putting the Lions at Cedar Park’s 31 yard line. At the end of the first quarter, the Timberwolves scored a field goal making it 10-0.

“I thought we played alright, but we expect much more,” junior Parker McNeil said.

With 10:17 remaining in the half Cedar Park scored a touchdown making it 17-0. Long stopped the Timberwovles from returning a junior Kyle Murdock punt. The Lions then recovered a Cedar Park fumble on the 42 yard line. On Cedar Park’s next drive senior Pedro Silva intercepted the ball at six yard line. Senior Ty Worthy then carried the ball for 22 yards. Then, Long carried the ball all the way to the one yard line. Long then scored a touchdown, making the game 17-7 at the end of the first half.

“[During halftime we said we had] to keep doing what we are doing and make no mistakes against a team like this,” Long said.

At the end of the third quarter, the Lions trailed 24-7 after Cedar Park scored a touchdown and the offense could not move the ball effectively for Leander. The Timberwolves scored again, and the quarter ended with the Lions in possession of the ball. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, McNeil threw a touchdown pass to new team member Dalton Flowers, with a score of 31-14. Cedar Park would score two late 4th quarter touchdowns to add to their lead.

“Practicing fast has been our focus this week, and taking advantage of their weak spots on defense,” McNeil said.

The Lions will face off against Marble Falls in the Pink Out game this Friday at Bible Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
